The Artifact

The Kabi Deep Space Artifact, or "The Artifact" for short, was an artificial object found in deep space by Sidonia about 600 years ago. Within The Artifact's central chamber, they discovered shards called "Kabi", which were composed of the only known material capable of piercing the True Body of a Gauna.

Construction

The Artifact was a tetrahedron of unknown, inert material, several dozen kilometers to a side. The surface was pocked with large holes of various diameters, and some of the structure's exterior edges and corners were broken or worn away. The holes descended hundreds of meters to a tetrahedral cavity in The Artifact's center that contained a number of free-floating Kabi shards. In contrast with the Kabi, the structural material of The Artifact had no obvious special properties. Despite being open to space, the interior of The Artifact was completely devoid of Heigus Particles.

Investigation

Around 400 Sidonia Era (2800 AD), The Artifact was detected by the Sidonia, which dispatched an exploratory team consisting of the Guardians Lala Hiyama, Kobayashi, Suzuki, and Hiroki Saitou with Type 5 Garde units, and Ochiai acting as supervisor. During the descent to The Artifact's core chamber via one of the holes, the team discovered a fissure in the hole's wall where a single, inactive Gauna had embedded itself. The lack of Heigus Particles in The Artifact had likely forced the Gauna into dormancy, but it awoke in the presence of the Guardians and immediately attacked, devouring Suzuki and destroying Saitou's Garde unit.

Unable to destroy the Gauna's True Body, Lala and Kobayashi fled toward the center of The Artifact, intending to use another hole to exit the structure, and stumbled across the Kabi shards. The Gauna pursued them, but left its True Body exposed. As it moved through the floating Kabi, one happened to penetrate the True Body, resulting in the Gauna's demise.

Following this incident, the Kabi were retrieved by the Sidonia to be used as anti-Gauna weapons, and the four surviving team members went on to establish the Immortal Ship Committee. The purpose of The Artifact and the nature of its creators were never uncovered.
