Long Summary[]

Nagate is plagued by nightmares of Yamano's death, with the Gauna taking her form. In his dream, he repeatedly tries to stomp on it, only to realize that a Kabizashi is necessary to destroy the core. However, his nightmare is abruptly interrupted when a high mass projectile crashes down, jolting Nagate awake.

When Nagate regains consciousness, he finds himself with his head resting on Izana's lap. Unfortunately, he has vomited on her due to feeling sick after reading the names on the memorial plaque. Nagate's encounters with the Gauna seem to be causing trauma for him. As they observe a funeral procession below, where people who have reached the end of their lives are sent for organic conversion, they realize the magnitude of the loss, seeing countless plaques covered in thousands of names.

The scene then shifts to an exterior view of a massive city structure reaching up into the clouds.

Nagate vomits once again and loses consciousness. This time, he wakes up in a nurse's room, calling out for the captain of the Sidonia. The nurse advises him to rest, but Nagate is concerned about missing his classes. The nurse informs him that he is simply malnourished. Nagate complains that his battle wounds have already healed, but the nurse says the casts are meant to be on for much longer. She calls for Trainee Rep Kunato to help Nagate get to class, but he refuses. He is seen alone with a woman. Later on, Kunato is seen at the festival with the same woman. Kunato is about Nagate piloting the Tsugumori.

Instead of Trainee Rep Kunato, the nurse contacts Vice-Rep Shizuka Hoshijiro to assist Nagate. Nagate expects her to criticize him and mention his unpleasant odor, just like his other classmates, but she surprises him by saying he doesn't smell.

Meanwhile, Izana reads a poster for the upcoming Gravity Festival and spots Nagate approaching. She wants to invite him, but when she sees Hoshijiro holding him closely, she becomes upset or possibly jealous and walks away without asking him.

In the next scene, the Dorm Bear Lala is surprised to see Nagate walking on his own. Nagate complains that he is already healed but his cast hasn't been removed yet. Lala encourages him to join his classmates in visiting the Gravity Fair.

The shopping district is depicted as densely stacked floors resembling the layout of Chongqing.

Nagate realizes he has no money for food, but Hoshijiro arrives and pays for him. Nagate is taken aback when he sees her dressed in a Yukata. He expresses gratitude to her for saving his life and pulling him away from the high-mass projectile. Hoshijiro wants to enjoy the festival without discussing the Gauna attack.

Observing them from a distance, Izana is roughly shoved by Kunato and accidentally stabbed in the leg by the end of her candy apple stick, causing it to embed deeply. Kunato ignores the situation and acts as if he doesn't know Izana. Nagate checks on Izana and then confronts Kunato, who refers to them as "inferior humans" and requests that they don't address him. Enraged, Nagate strikes Kunato with his crutch, but Kunato swiftly and efficiently defeats him in hand-to-hand combat. Kunato angrily wonders why Nagate was chosen to pilot the Tsugumori instead of himself. He ultimately breaks Nagate's arm.
